Members of Parliament have been “duped” and given only 25kg of sugar contained in the bags of 50kg.
On 23rd of last month 24 MPs from NRM and 3 from the opposition were invited to Jinja and each given Shs1million and a 50kg a bag of sugar to allegedly support the new constitutional amendments termed by the media as the Age Limit Bill.
One of the beneficiaries, Akol Anthony of Kilak North however took the initiative and went to a weighing scale to confirm the weight of the sugar.
Akol who confessed last week of receiving the gifts, told journalists on Tuesday that he realized the sugar was only half the labeled load.
“I have now confirmed that the sugar we were given was only 25kg instead of the 50kg written on the sack,” Mr. Akol said.
The gifts handed to the MPs at the Mayuge Sugar Factory and the MPs were saidto be from the Parliamentary Food and Security Forum.
The private members bill by Nakifuma MP, Sekitole Kafeero to increase the retirement age for judges and open the currently restricted two terms for the Electoral Commission was moved in the same week the alleged gifts exchanged hands.
Akol said that Sekitoko and the seconded of the Bill, Paul Amoru from Dokolo north were present in Jinja and appealed to the MPs to support their course before money and sugar were given.
When contacted by ChimpReports, Sekitoleko who is attending the Uganda North America Convention in the United States said he would release a statement when he comes back.
Meanwhile Amoru denied the claims and said he has not stepped in Jinja or even privately met Akol the week the Bill was tabled.
